Poppies

a good friend tells me that a portfolio should never contain photos of flowers. Not sure if I agree but he has inspired me to look at different perspectives and processing.

Hiking Signal Hill

The person I was sharing a room with in St. Johns wanted to go to Signal hill and I wanted to go again and hike the opposite direction. It starts easy enough: at the Battery. which is where Marconi sent his famous signal.

however, it starts going along the cliff:

The views are fantastic:

but looking down can be a problem:

but looking straight ahead can show you some cool things as well. Like this crack that runs the whole cliff. You could feel air blowing out and hear the wind and surf inside

and then the path gets REALLY narrow. There's the chain on the right and a sheer drop to the left:

it ends at St. John's. At the deck of the house on the lower right. Yes. You actually walk across their deck and onto the street.

after that we walked to one of the many pubs for a hearty supper.  and a beer. :)

Studies of an Iceberg

I was in Newfoundland last week attending a professional conference. It was located in St. John's (the capital city) and of course I took my camera. I heard that there was an iceberg in the next harbour over. So I had a taxi take me to the top of Signal Hill and followed the trail to the iceberg. I saw lots to excite me (more photos later). But this is what I saw. the photos start from far away and get closer.

After I saw this I started to hike back towards St. John's except that the streets I was on and the streets on my map did not match. I saw two older gentlemen talking so I stopped to ask for directions. One of them said I was on the right road. The other said "I'm heading back that way I'll give you a lift". I can't imagine being offered this anywhere else and nor could I believe what I did next- I got in. :) The people in NFLD are as nice as you may have heard.

Play time

I've been letting Acero and Irish out together for some play time.

Acero is showing his athleticness. This tells me that I better have established our relationship before I ever think of sitting on him (fortunately, I have a few years) and that I better work on my core strength :)

Irish showing that the 12 year old still has it!

and one of my favs:
